The City of Nelson will ask the world’s largest oil and gas companies to help pay for climate change adaptation.
Councillor Valerie Warmington says municipalities don’t have the money to deal it with it themselves.
Council also voted to bring a similar resolution to the Association of Kootenay Boundary local governments.
It follows a request from the West Kootenay EcoSociety, which first approached council in April.
However, at that time they were concerned about legal implications.
The EcoSociety tried again in October, resulting in the motion adopted this week.
Saanich, Victoria, Colwood, and Highlands have agreed to write similar letters.
