Banner changes don’t go far enough, petitioner says

A woman who started a petition to change Nelson’s public banner policy is grateful to council for taking action.

The city will now only hang banners for non-profits promoting events and not allow political statements.

But Eliza Hicks says that would still allow anti-abortion groups to get their message out on the city’s dime.

Hicks says she’d take an equally dim view of a banner that advertised an event opposing vaccinations.

Her online petition was in response to a banner that read “Respect human life from conception to natural death.”
