Nelson signs on to renewable energy pledge

It didn’t come easy but Nelson is the latest municipality to commit to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050.

City council passed a resolution tonight following a long debate and after defeating an earlier motion.

Councillor Valerie Warmington says they ultimately agreed to the West Kootenay EcoSociety’s request.

Warmington says she wasn’t willing to leave it up to the next council, to be elected in the fall.

Nelson becomes the sixth community in Canada to pass such a resolution and second in the Kootenays after Slocan.

Council will also urge the next council to include the campaign in their five-year strategic plan.
