Council weighs process for approving retail cannabis licences

Another aspect of cannabis legalization includes procedures to process retail sales applications. This would help The City of Nelson determine which applications to approve as they will likely receive more than the proposed cap of five. City staff wanted to avoid relying solely on a lottery system and came up with an evaluation matrix that would allocate points. There were some concerns from city council. Councillor Michael Daily felt the matrix seemed a bit subjective.

Applicants could receive points for building improvement plans, odor control measures, and for their qualifications and experience. If there was a tie it would then go to a lottery system.

The city says it recently closed a dispensary because of issues with odor.
