Evacuation at A&W after smoke and ‘electrical smell’

An interesting morning for those having breakfast at A&W in Nelson on Sunday.  The restaurant was evacuated just before 10:00am.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services say they were called to reports of a kitchen fire. Upon arrival, there were no visual signs however they were told there was an electrical smell and smoke from the back of the building. Half of the restaurant didn’t have power as well.

An electrician found the power issue affected the function of two electrical motors which had over heated. There was no damage to the building.

Nelson Fire and Rescue remind the public to call 911 and report any unusual smoke or smell. They say A&W staff did an impressive job with the evacuation and reporting of the incident.
