New lighting in the works for downtown

There will hopefully be Christmas lights up this year on Baker Street in Nelson. City planner Natalie Andrijancic says new street lighting for the whole downtown is currently being worked on, not only for the Christmas season. A consultant is currently looking at options for Baker Street, Victoria and other cross streets and Vernon.

Existing downtown lights need to be replaced as a recent study found the light poles are failing due to age and structural deterioration. She says a committee will be formed with members from the business and cultural sectors as well as community member, who will narrow down the selection.

Then the public will have a chance to weigh in.

Andrijancic says the City is working on getting something up for Christmas this year as well.

Installation will most likely happen next year for the other downtown lighting.
