Pride flag to be raised in Nelson this month

The City of Nelson has only ever raised the Pride flag once and a local group wants to see that change.

Stephanie Myers is one of the organizers with Kootenay Pride who have asked city council to fly both the Pride and Trans flags in front of city hall during the Pride celebrations, which kick off in Nelson on August 27. Council came to a decision on the flags last night which Myers says is a ‘small victory’.

Council passed an official flag policy as well and will look into purchasing a community flag pole during the next budget session.

Myers says she doesn’t see why the community flag is completely necessary.

Besides the Pride and Metis flags, the City’s policy will not consider flag raising or lowering for any community group at City Hall, unless a community pole is installed.

The only time the Pride flag has flown in front of city hall was after the Orlando massacre in
June of 2016.
