City Council Candidate: Brian Shields

Brian Shields is running with the Coalition of Responsible Electors or CORE for Nelson City Council. He says he has the skill set required with years of experience running public works operations and crediential in environmental engineering and risk management.

Climate change and wildfire are important issues to him. He says the City has done some work, for example putting together an Emergency Operations Centre, but he has an idea of his own on how the city can be more proactive.

“Dig a well on the mountain to supplement our reservoir with water and also to give us extra water to fight a fire if it comes to the doors of Nelson.”

He says potholes and weekly garbage pick up during the summer are also part of his platform.

Something else he wants to highlight is intention behind CORE which Shields feels there has been some misunderstanding around.

“We’re a diverse group of people from all walks of life. We’re not a slate or a block of votes that’s going to take over council and not have a thoughtful discourse at the table. CORE was just an avenue for people to be able to run for council and we saw that there was strength in running as a team.”

Shields has lived in Nelson for 10 years. He’s a sports and outdoors lover, having formerly been a lacrosse player and skateboarder. He says he also loves to create and is an artist and singer.
