Nelson council approves parking amnesty

Nelson city council has approved a six-week amnesty for parking tickets.

Outstanding tickets can be paid at a discounted rate of $15 until Jan. 19.

Councillor Rik Logtenberg says he hopes people take advantage of it.

But it’s a one-time offer.

Two-thirds of the fine revenue collected will go into the city’s downtown/waterfront reserve.

Tonight council decided the rest will support an active transportation plan.

Although the city has an 85 per cent collection rate for BC vehicles there are still 27,000 outstanding tickets dating back 16 years.

The amnesty comes as the city switches over to a new computer system for parking enforcement.
