Nelson Mural Festival issues call for artists

The Nelson Mural Festival is gearing up for another event. There is currently a call for muralists and walls – any interested building owners and artists can apply by January 31. Executive Director for the Nelson and District Arts Council Sidney Black says they’re looking to do eight to 10 murals again this year, but other aspects of the festival might be bigger.

“We’ve also applied for additional funding that we can increase the festival portion of the event, so bring in more live musicians, bring in more dancers and actors, things like that; more performance artists then have additional workshops and things like that happening.”

The City has already donated $25,000 towards the festival. Black says they expect to know in April or May how many pieces they’ll be doing.

Black explains that building owners with or without funding to contribute to the artwork will be considered.

“We usually have people donate a minimum of $1,000 to have us paint on their wall and then they get to select from a curated list of artists.”

Black says there are five community jury members who pick the artists and rank them by genre. The building owners then pick the genres that they like and can see the top artists. Those without funding to contribute don’t have as much of a say in which mural goes up.

The festival is planned for August 16-18, 2019.
