RDCK takes legal action against Teck

Teck Resources is being sued by the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

The RDCK has filed papers seeking compensation from Teck for the spill from an old tailings pond in Salmo two years ago.

The metals company owned and operated it up to the early 1980’s.

The legal action also calls for Teck to pay for environmental investigations and monitoring, the construction of an engineered wetland and many other elements.

RDCK area director Ron Mickel has knowledge of the site from his previous days with the Ministry of Environment.

Contaminants have been leaching from the pond for many years and Mickel says that and the 2012 spill should be Teck’s responsibility.
Teck sold the land in 1981 and the RDCK bought it almost 20 years later as a site for their landfill.
