Blewett Elementary expansion approved to enter planning stages

The superintendent for Kootenay Lake School District is happy with recent news that expansion planning will get underway for Blewett Elementary. Government consent was granted for the Board to study and develop plans. Christine Perkins explains what that will entail.

“The school itself has an excellent gym and excellent facilities, it’s just that its at 154 per cent capacity, so we’re looking at expanding classroom space.”

The district has to wait until March 2020 to learn if final approval comes to actually build. There were also hopes that a new school would be built in Nelson, which Perkins feels is now out of the picture.

“What we’re looking at now, instead of a new school for Trafalgar, it would be an expansion or renovation of Trafalgar.”

The district was looking expand a school in Salmo as well. Facilities plan meetings have been held to gather community input and will be hosted again in May or June.
