Containment started on Slocan Park wildfire

For the first time officials at the Slocan Park wildfire are talking containment.

Information Officer Julie Castonguay says the blaze is now under 100-hectares in size and is 20% contained.

The controlled burn of up to 50-metres between the fire and the control lines nearest the community has gone well.

Hose lines are nearly completely around the west and north flanks as well.

Castonguay says the Evacuation Alert is still in place and it’s still too early to talk about lifting that.

In the meantime she’s asking people who float down the Slocan River to be aware of the constant operations of the many helicopters working the blaze.

The choppers are accessing the river regularly to fill their buckets.
