What to do about RD backyard burning?

The issue of Nelson’s airshed has come up again ahead of another fall burning season in the neighboring regional district.

The East Shore wants to join Creston in waiving tipping fees through October for yard waste to encourage residents to do the right thing.

But Nelson mayor John Dooley would rather see burning restrictions and proper enforcement because smoke ends up over the queen city.

East Shore Director Gary Jackman favors the voluntary educational route.


Jackmann says they have been pondering burning bylaw options but at this stage would rather save on bylaw officer costs and illegal dumping that a burn ban might prompt.
