Slocan manhunt over:Degroot dead

The five day manhunt in Slocan has ended with the death of Peter Degroot.

RCMP have released a very basic statement saying the 45 year old died after an interaction between two members of the specialist Emergency Response team when they entered a cabin Monday afternoon.

No other details have been given and the scene has been sealed off awaiting the Independent Investigations Office.

After almost five days of searching police have removed the remaining road blocks and access restrictions that had been in place to the west of Slocan.

Despite extensive efforts by specialist land and air teams using hi-tech equipment police had not been able to track him down until Monday.

He had been described as armed and dangerous. Earlier RCMP said they have been challenged by rugged terrain and what they term “other challenges in a dynamic and evolving event.”

Police figure Degroot may have been monitoring media coverage of the situation and on Sunday appealed to him to come in and talk to them.

His death brings to an end a very tense time for local residents.
