Local role in radon code changes

The province will implement new building codes December 19th following a BC Lung Association’s Radon Mitigation pilot project involving the City of Castlegar.

The project included 16 homes in BC, eight of which were in Castlegar and Nelson.

Castlegar’s Director of Development services Phil Markin says the current building code did not address the radon issue.

The Passive Radio Reduction system – with the pipe – will be recommended in all homes built after 2006.

Castlegar and area is a hotspot for radon – a gas that can cause cancer over long term exposure.
