Janice Morrison elected mayor of Nelson

Incumbent city councillor Janice Morrison will be the next mayor of Nelson, defeating incumbent John Dooley by a vote of 1,562 to 915.

“It is a honor to have the support of the residents of Nelson,” she said. “It is an important role, and I am extremely humbled.”

Morrison says the new council needs to change how things are done, but before they can implement effective change everyone needs to be on the same page.

“I kind of want to change the agenda,” she adds. “I want to make sure the new team is up to speed, especially since we have some new faces.”

Morrison says Dooley did a great job in the city and wishes him well.

John Buffery was third with 897 votes, Tom Prior fourth with 67 and Mike Zeabin fifth with 29.

City council will be made up of Kate Tait (2,417), incumbent Jesse Woodward (2,060), incumbent Rik Logtenberg (1,813), incumbent Keith Page (1,732), Jesse Pineiro (1,626), and Leslie Payne (1,521).

Falling short were Glenn Sutherland (1,370), Ainsleah Hastings (1,138), Brenton Raby (788), and Kyle Wilkinson (656).

Turnout was 41 per cent.

In the race for Nelson school trustee, Julie Bremner (1,417) and Murray Shunter (1,243) were elected. They were followed by Tricia Braun (638), Lesley Garlow (638), Tamara Ziemer (272), and Kathy Krulitsy (272).
