Suspect arrested after Kaslo RCMP find dangerous chemicals

Kaslo RCMP have taken a Meadow Creek man into custody after surveillance footage showing chemicals being poured from a jerry can into vehicles.

Police were called to service in the early morning of Nov. 18 to respond to a call of mischief in the community.

Officers later discovered footage which showed the suspect, Benjamin John Velt, using dangerous combined chemicals, along with a respirator and a HAZMAT suit.

RCMP quickly expanded their investigation and worked with Kaslo Community Leadership, Kaslo Fire Department, the Ministry of Environment and a contracted chemist.

The team set to work to mitigate risk to the public by removing vehicles involved to a safe place outside the area.

Officers also seized several weapons including a loaded semi automatic handgun, and a loaded rifle.

Police arrested Velt on Nov. 21 after he attempted to flee, but officers were quick to detain him.

Velt was taken to Nelson for further processing where he awaits his trial on Nov. 29.

He faces several criminal code offenses.

Police said Velt has a long history with them, dating back to 2004.
