Kootenay unemployment rate holds steady in April

The unemployment rate in the Kootenays hardly changed last month compared to the same time last year.

Statistics Canada says there were 82,700 people working and 3,700 looking for work out of a population of 141,700 in our area in April, for a rate of 4.3 per cent.

In April 2022, there were 81,700 people with work and 3,600 seeking jobs out of a population of 140,400, a rate of 4.2 per cent.

The B.C. rate was five per cent, the same as the previous year. The national rate was also five per cent, unchanged since December.

StatsCan says the economy added another 41,000 part-time jobs last month. There were gains in gains in wholesale and retail, plus transportation and warehousing, but decreases in business, building, and support services.
