RDCK residents urged to be flood-prepared this weekend

Flood preparedness is encouraged for residents in the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) over the long weekend.

In a media release, the RDCK has stated that due to the unseasonably hot weather within the southern interior of BC, the risk of flooding has increased and residents are encouraged to be flood prepared.

The Slocan River is currently under a flood watch warning and all other areas of the RDCK remain under a high streamflow advisory.

Over the past several days snowmelt has increased flow levels in rivers and creeks across the RDCK and water levels are expected to continue to rise throughout the weekend.

These same conditions are also impacting Kootenay lake levels, FortisBC issued a statement earlier this week stating that lake levels could increase by as much as five feet within the next two weeks.

The RDCK reminds everyone to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks, avoid recreational activities such as fishing, swimming and boating near high streamflow rivers or streams.

They also stated that the key to emergency preparedness is knowing the risks and having a plan.
