UPDATED: Mountie bear-sprayed in Slocan traffic stop

A Slocan Lake RCMP officer was bear-sprayed during an impaired driving investigation.

Cst. Shaun Kennedy, the acting detachment commander, said in an email that the incident happened around 9 p.m. on Friday.

The person under investigation grabbed a can of bear spray, and a struggle followed which resulted in the spray discharging, exposing both the officer and the suspect.

Kennedy said the officer was able to de-escalate the situation and several community members came to his assistance, as he was working alone.

“I can confirm the officer has made a full recovery,” Kennedy said. “We are all thankful, as the situation could have unfolded very differently.”

The man received a 90-day roadside suspension for impaired driving, but police say he will not otherwise face criminal charges.
