Man admits to stabbing at Shambhala

As expected, a man has pleaded guilty in a stabbing at the Shambhala Music Festival last year.

Taio Cote admitted to assault with a weapon during a court appearance in Nelson on Tuesday.

He initially pleaded not guilty and elected to be tried by judge alone, but changed his mind. He will return to court on Sept. 12 to set a date to start the sentencing process.

The stabbing occurred on July 22 of last year at the event near Salmo.

Although police described the injuries as non-life-threatening, the victim’s mother told Vista Radio her son was stabbed in the neck and nearly died in a “random act of violence.”

And while police said Cote knew the victim, the mother said they only knew each other as children in school and were not friends.

Cote remains free on bail.
