Man arrested in Nelson break-ins

A 26-year-old man is facing charges following a rash of damaged windows and break-ins early Tuesday.

The Nelson Police Department says the first occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the Shell station on Nelson Avenue. The man tried to enter the store, but staff told him they could only help him through the after-hours window. He’s accused of then smashing the front door, damaging displays and stealing items.

Then at 1:40 a.m. a man was spotted in the 100 block of Herridge Lane looking through vehicles and trying to steal a bicycle. Half an hour later a man broke the window on the front door of Nelson Farmers Supply. The window shattered but didn’t fall out of its frame. The suspect walked away.

A few minutes later a man smashed the front door glass at the Rona store on Government Road and stole several items.

Sgt. Dan Markevich said police identified and arrested the suspect later that morning, who has no fixed address. He remains in custody pending a court date.

Police thanked business owners and witnesses who worked quickly to provide statements and security video to police to forward to Crown counsel.
