New retirement complex in Nelson to be complete by spring

A new seniors housing development in Nelson is expected to be ready within a few months.

Located on Vernon Street, Waterview Retirement Resort will provide 125 units for community members ages 55 and up in supported or independent living environments.

The complex will have a mix of studios and one- or two-bedroom units, some furnished and some subsidized for seniors who qualify.

In May, the project became the first seniors facility in the country to receive WELL pre-certification status, which is a global rating system that recognizes a building design efforts that promote the health of the people occupying them.

Cindy Shaw, marketing director with Waterview Retirement Resort, says the project is on track to welcome its residents by next spring.

“We are so excited to be getting it up and running,” she says.

“It’s been slow process, but it’s finally moving way more quickly now. The different levels of steel are going up, so it’s going to now be built quite rapidly. Our registration process is open so people can go to our website and register for our waitlist, then have first access to room choice and selection.”

Shaw says the rental rate of the units is yet to be finalized as they will vary depending on size and whether a resident requires independent or supported living services. Once finalized the total monthly cost will include meals, utilities, parking and transportation services.

The development will also have 5,000 square feet of commercial storefront space available for lease.

“Applications are open for the commercial units as well. We’re working with a realtor in town to start working out the details and finding a good fit for those spaces,” says Shaw.

As construction progresses, Shaw says they plan on holding a job fair in the early spring to meet the community and provide employment opportunities to locals.

“We’re really excited about meeting the people in Nelson who want to serve others,” she said. “We consider ourselves to be a company of difference makers and we’re looking forward to making a positive difference in the lives of seniors, but also for our staff and create a healthy environment for all the people that are within the community.”
