Selkirk College’s Silver King Campus student housing project in Nelson is on track to be move-in ready for early 2024.
A media release from Selkirk says the 35-unit building is part of a $33.9 million two-pronged housing solution that is also adding 112 student housing units at the Castlegar Campus next fall.
Construction at the Silver King site broke ground last November. The project is using a modular build process which saw the three-storey building assembled on site using a crane back in May.
The $33.9 million project, funded by the province and with a $1.65 million contribution from the Columbia Basin Trust, falls in line with the provincial Homes for Action Plan. Once both buildings are complete, they will increase on-campus housing at the college by 71 per cent.
“It’s exciting to see this project get to a point where students will soon have this wonderful option for housing as they pursue their post-secondary goals,” said Selkirk College board of governors chair Margaret Sutherland in the release.
“It’s an important project that will help the college meet the needs of both students and the community. Proper housing is a critical element for learner success and the completed project will result in better outcomes across the institution.”
Construction at the Castlegar Campus project is also well underway but the opening timeline has been delayed to next fall, thanks to heavy rainfall in August that severely damaged the construction site.
