Avalanche severely injures skier near Whitewater

Avalanche Canada reports that one person was injured in a skier-triggered avalanche in the backcountry near Whitewater Ski Resort on Saturday.

According to its report, Avalanche Canada says the individual was skiing with two others in the area known as the Goat Slide when the incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m.

The report says the party of 3 was leaving the area when the first skier triggered the avalanche and was swept away through steep trees and cliff terrain. The individual was not buried in the avalanche but sustained serious injuries.

Eleven Whitewater staff members were successful in rescuing the injured skier.

Avalanche Canada says the area where the incident occurred is easily accessible by Whitewater’s new Raven Chair lift, which is why both Avalanche Canada and Whitewater are reminding backcountry users of the importance of being prepared and educated in avalanche safety.

As of Thursday, Avalanche Canada has listed the avalanche risk in the region as “considerable,” with a three out of five rating.
