Nelson Fire and Rescue Service successfully extinguished a 120-metre by 30-metre brush fire behind the City of Nelson’s Public Works building on Monday afternoon, June 8.
According to a press release, the department received reports of the blaze around 1:40 p.m. on CPR land.
Both on-duty personnel and the Fire Chief responded immediately, with their first primary objective being to safeguard nearby buildings and limit the fire’s growth.
Crews faced challenges accessing certain areas due to thick brush, but their aggressive attack allowed them to gain control of the fire quickly.
Firefighters remained on the scene for over two hours patrolling the perimeter, hitting persistent hot spots, and ensuring the fire was extinguished.
A total of five firefighters were involved in the incident, using one fire engine, one tender truck, one command vehicle, and one rescue truck.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
