Castlegar Winterfest cancelled due to strike

The decision by Castlegar’s unionized employees to continue their labour action during Winterfest is unfortunate and unfair.

So says city councillor Deb McIntosh after the event’s organizing committee announced Friday that the 19th annual Winterfest will be cancelled.

Some participants said they would not take part in the event if the CUPE city workers were maintaining a picket line. The union said Thursday the picket lines at city hall would remain in place and they asked the public to respect that.

McIntosh says the union is targetting the wrong people.

McIntosh believes it’s an unpopular move but says strikes aren’t pretty.

CUPE Local 2262 is on strike as they feel job security and concessions aren’t being addressed as they try to reach a collective agreement with the City.
