CUPE says Winterfest could still happen

The CUPE local representing striking city workers in Castlegar is hopeful the Winterfest event can be salvaged by having at the Community Complex.

It was cancelled Friday because the tree lighting happens at City Hall where there are picket lines.

And as local 2262 President Leford Lafayette explains prominent business people and sponsors did not want to cross those lines.

Lafayette says union members are keen to volunteer their time to put up the lights and decorations- but not where there are picket lines. He says he’s talking to organisers.

The city is making it clear unionized employees have always been paid to work on setting up Winterfest.*

*An earlier report suggested workers always volunteered to set up Winterfest.
