Kitchen fire at Selkirk College contained

Nelson Fire & Rescue Services responded to a kitchen fire at Selkirk College’s Tenth Street Campus on Wednesday evening.

The Fire Service said it received reports of the blaze at 10:45 p.m.

When crews arrived on the scene, they found that the fire had extended from a four-burner stovetop to the microwave and wall-mounted cabinets.

Another resident in the building had partially extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher. Crews completed the job by isolating the power to the stove.

The cause of the fire is not suspicious and occurred in a four-room occupancy with a shared kitchen. No injuries were reported.

Selkirk College staff also attended the scene to find housing for the four displaced occupants. All other students were able to return to their residences.

Nelson Fire Rescue Services reminds the public on the importance of a working smoke alarm, and to remain present and attentive while cooking.
