Nelson Police Department weekly report

Officers with the Nelson Police Department responded to 145 calls for service last week, from August 18 to August 24.

Toxic Drugs Circulating

Nelson Police are urging caution after Emergency Services saw an increase in overdoses last week.

Police suspect the increase is due to “especially toxic” drugs currently circulating in the city.

Fortunately, all individuals were revived, and there were no fatalities.

Arrest on Warrants

On Monday, August 19, an officer conducting routine patrol shortly before 2 a.m. noted a vehicle with a poorly secured licence plate hanging at an angle.

Upon running the vehicle plates, he learned the it had no insurance, and the registered owner had multiple warrants for their arrest.

After pulling the driver over, he confirmed they were the registered owner of the licence plate and placed the driver under arrest without issue.

The individual was travelling with a dog, who was also transported to the station and given food and water while arrangements for its care were made.

Stolen Vehicle from Residential Neighbourhood

On Thursday, August 22, police responded to a report of a truck theft from a residence overnight.

The truck, a bright green 1993 GMC Sierra, has yet to be recovered. Police ask anyone who sees a truck matching that description to report it.

Additionally, police urge the public to do their part in preventing vehicle theft, which is an increasingly prevalent issue.

Always lock your doors, park in a secure, well-lit area whenever possible, do not keep spare keys on the exterior of the vehicle, and consider installing a dash cam or tracking device.

Assault with a Weapon

On Friday, August 23, police responded to an altercation that involved multiple people.

The department said two individuals were hit in the face with bear spray, and the attacker was taken into custody.

Bear spray, a knife, and a box of what appeared to be .22 calibre bullets were seized from the accused.

All of the individuals involved knew each other and gave conflicting stories of what occurred.

The file is under investigation to determine exactly how the incident unfolded.
