Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society clean up the lakeshore

The rain ended just in time for over 25 people to hit the shores of the West arm of Kootenay Lake on Tuesday, Aug 27th for the first lakeshore clean-up that the Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FOKL) has hosted all summer. T

he Society had been on a hiatus for a few months while the board, volunteers, and staff assessed the organization’s capacity.

There were 1000s of pieces of litter and trash picked up from on the shore and in the water. The garbage removed from this delicate ecosystem weighed over 150 lbs (plus a shopping cart). These sorts of lake shore clean-ups are crucial to keeping the waterways habitable for the wildlife that calls them home.

FOKL beach cleanup organizer Lily Feeback shared, “It was a great turnout!  I’m so happy to see the community of Nelson come together and support Kootenay Lake and FOKL. Thank you to everyone who volunteered despite the iffy weather!”

Summertime is lake time, and many residents and visitors to the Kootenays are lucky enough to spend time on or in the lake. The clean cool waters can feel like a lifesaver, especially during those extra hot days when temperatures reach over 40.

With so many people enjoying time on the lake, lots of litter is bound to make it into the lake, and the Friends of Kootenay Lake are happy that they can help keep the shores clean and pristine.

Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society is planning another clean-up before the fall is over, with the help of the members, volunteers, and community.

On Sunday, Sept 22nd the location will be Cottonwood Creek.
