Yes, people really do get caught out by that phone scam.
Nelson RCMP are reporting two separate incidents where victims have been called late at night by someone pretending to be a relative needing money.
Police say the fraudster claims to be a nephew who’s been involved in an accident and urgently needs cash for a car rental or medical fees.
In both cases cash was actually sent off via Money Gram.
Nelson RCMP say scammers will use social media sites to find out family info. Anyone who may have received a call like this can contact the police.
