WestJet paying out $12.5 million in class-action settlement over baggage fees

If you paid to check your bags on a WestJet flight on certain dates prior to 2019, you may be eligible for part of a $12.5 million settlement.

Claims are now open for individuals anywhere in the world who paid a fee for their first checked bag with WestJet on domestic flights between October 29, 2014 and July 29, 2017. It also applies for international flights between January 6, 2016 and February 27, 2019.

The B.C. Court of Appeal dismissed earlier efforts by the airline to overturn the certification of the class-action lawsuit in 2022. WestJet has since amended wording suggesting one checked bag would be free.

Some other conditions may apply to make a claim, visit the official settlement page for more information and to file a claim.
