Shop local this holiday season

Residents are being urged to shop local this holiday season and help boost the Kootenay economy.

Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tom Thomson says local retailers have a lot to offer.

“It’s a challenging time right now in between seasons, there’s not a lot of tourism happening so we really rely on local shoppers and regional shoppers coming and supporting the local retail mix in Nelson, Trail and Castlegar, and throughout the region,” said Thomson.

“Money that’s spent locally really circulates multiple times and it helps to offset a lot of the impacts that these small businesses have. They’re the ones that are paying a local tax base, they’re the ones that are employing individuals, and as much as we find it easy to sit down at a computer and order something online from a from an out-of-market retailer, those people aren’t the ones that are supporting local non-profits are coming and doing sponsorship of local hockey and soccer and basketball teams.”

Late Night Shopping returns to the Kootenays
