Nelson vigil to mark National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women

The Nelson Violence Against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) Committee is hosting a candlelight vigil on Friday, December 6, to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

December 6 marks the anniversary of Montreal’s École Polytechnique massacre, where 14 women were murdered simply because they were women.

To commemorate this day, the Nelson VAWIR Committee invites community members to reflect on its significance by gathering on the grounds of Nelson City Hall for a Candlelight Vigil at 12:15 p.m.

Community members will also see the Clothesline Display on the grounds of City Hall and in front of the Courthouse. The Clothesline Project is a visual display of violence statistics that are often overlooked.

Each shirt in the display is decorated to represent a particular woman’s experience, either by the survivor herself or by someone who cares about her.

Residents can visit the Nelson VAWIR Committee Facebook page for updates on the event and links to resources.
