The BC Government has launched a registry to track short term rentals.
The province wants to ensure illegal short-term rentals can no longer operate, which is expected to help provide more long-term homes for people.
Minister of Housing and Municipal affairs Ravi Kahlon says along with giving hosts who play by the rules the chance to legally operate rentals, the registry would crack down on those breaking the rules.
Those who own short-term rentals and listings on AirBnB, Vrbo and others must register with the province, along with hosts operating outside areas.
The registering fees are $100 a year for a rental where the host lives in it, $450 a year for a rental that doesn’t have the host living there, and $600 for an entire strata hotel.
The province says after getting a provincial registration number, you must display it on all online listings by May 1.
If you don’t have a number and don’t comply, your listings will be taken down as of June 1.
