Union and supporters lay into Castlegar council

A very tense meeting in Castlegar Monday night as the striking city workers and their supporters laid into council and the administration.

After a barrage of questions and criticism the biggest accusation came from a very emotional Leford Lafayette. He says he became president of the CUPE local to fight against his own harassment.

Lafayette says it’s sick that the city has forced him to return his radio as a volunteer fire fighter and won’ let him go to the fire hall.

Mayor Lawrence Chernoff says the emotions are coming from a small group and he believes the wider community supports council’s stance.

The union wants the city to return to the bargaining table.

Chernoff says the union rejected a good mediated offer so needs to present something substantive for that to happen.
