Zinc rolls again from Pend Oreille mine to Teck

Shipments of zinc concentrate are once again being trucked to Teck in Trail from the Pend Oreille mine near Metalline Falls in Washington state.

The mine stopped operating in 2009 because of market conditions.

But a rebound in the zinc price has allowed Teck to re-start production which will mean 230 jobs for the small US community.

Company spokesman Richard Deane says the zinc concentrate from Washington is a good fit for their operations.

The zinc price is around a dollar a pound (lb)  – which is almost double what it was when the mine shut down six years ago.
