Grand Forks council facing multiple challenges

The new Grand Forks council is sure getting its feet wet.

There’s an abundance of controversy that the new mayor describes as the “elephants in the room.”

Citizens want to know what severance package went to their former CAO Doug Allin who left after the election. Mayor Frank Konrad says that information still remains in-camera so there’s very little he can say.

The community also remains split over whether to cull deer despite a near 60% yes vote in November’s referendum. Konrad -who prefers a relocation of the animals -isn’t so sure about the merits of that vote process.

A councillor has been sent to a provincial workshop to learn best practices for handling urban deer.

Council is also hearing complaints about supposed shoddy work with the water meter installation roll-out and there’s the controversy over the unlicensed medical marijuana dispensary in town.

Konrad says his council needs time to get a handle on everything.
