Fire Risk Management Officer directive questioned

An RDCK rural director is questioning a new directive from the province’s Office of the Fire Commissioner that all departments now need a full-time Risk Management Officer.

Hans Cunningham in Ymir – who spent decades as the volunteer Fire Chief there- is fully behind skills training and mitigating risk.

But he’s wondering about the motives of this new mandate and why there’s not yet a specific job description.

Cunningham figures taxpayers could be on the hook for about $100,000 to have the Risk Management Officer position.
