Castlegar takes legal action after online attack on councillor

The City of Castlegar has sought legal action to defend one of its councillors they feel was attacked on social media. The online comments are said to be libelous and defamatory and appeared during the recent labour dispute between the City and its unionized employees.

CAO John Malcolm confirms they employed legal means to defend the member of council.

Concerns were expressed during the public during question period at Monday night’s council meeting that the city was using taxpayer’s money to sue potential taxpayers.

Malcolm says the city would pay for legal action to protect any councillor who is under attack in their functions as a member of council.

*The city said the defamatory comments had been taken down since the litigation letters were sent out. However some comments remain online as their authors contest they are not defamatory. (*This story has been amended since it’s original posting).
