Nelson council has decided on smaller rate increases than were originally slated in long-term planning.
They will be 3% for water and 2% for sewer for a number of years going forward. The longer term plan had called for rates of 4% and 3% respectively.
Mayor Deb Kozak says she heard before the recent election from people who figured the annual rate increases had become too high as the Queen City gets on top of its huge infrastructure deficit.
Nine years ago Nelson set ambitious water and sewer replacement targets that have been largely met or exceeded.

Kozak says the lowering of the rates does not compromise their ability to address infrastructure.
This year’s increase works out to $2 a month more for a single family homeowner.
