Nelson council is changing the way it allocates the annual Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiative grants.
In the past up to 35% of the money- of the $125,000 total -has been earmarked for the arts and culture sector.
Now they’ll aim for a 25% split among all four pillars of sustainability – environment, social, economic as well as the arts.
Councillor Anna Purcell isn’t entirely sold on the idea but notes all requests are judged on merit.
In future Purcell wants to see the other sectors judged by an expert panel -as the arts ones are – to keep the decision-making arms length from the politicians.
