East Shore residents say the Kootenay Lake Ferry fight is far from over, as the saga continues with locals being stranded earlier this week following reports of a fire on board the Osprey.
On Tuesday, March 4, the 4:30pm sailing from Balfour to Crawford Bay was cancelled due to an unexpected issue with the engine, according to MLA Brittny Anderson, and the other ferry was not available.
Of those left at the dock were teachers and students and people deemed essential services with medical appointments.
“I understand that yesterday’s unexpected disruption was incredibly frustrating and disappointing for people wanting to cross, on top of the frustrations people are already feeling due to ongoing job action. I know it was a particular challenge for the bus driver, teacher and students that were effected, and that it’s upsetting for anyone who is either stuck on the wrong side of the water or needs to take a long detour to get home or to work.” said Anderson.
“Essential service designation levels are determined by the Labour Relations Board during a labour dispute to ensure people’s health and safety. In this case, it was an unexpected mechanical issue, and the designated sailing had to be cancelled with the safety of travellers and crew in mind.”
Lorill Darwel, spokesperson for the East Shore, says the community remains divided with the current essential services order and businesses and people are suffering.
“It’s a terrible mess. We’ve lost people in the community. Businesses are suffering. People’s mental health is suffering. Community members have been threatened.”
Darwell says the community continues to call for forced arbitration.
“The government needs to get involved and force this to stop.” said Darwel.
“The union has lost its place and it’s no longer doing what it’s supposed to do.”
