Police warn of consequences of damaging campaign signs

Nelson RCMP and Nelson Police are reminding the public of the regulations regarding campaign signage, after both police forces received several reports of damaged election signs.

Nelson Police say they responded to a call this week reporting that several campaign signs belonging to a political party had been removed or vandalized.

These signs were posted on public property at various locations in the Nelson area.

As a result, NPD and Nelson RCMP remind residents that it is illegal to deface, alter, or steal campaign signs under the Canada Elections Act.

It is an offence under Section 325 of the Canada Elections Act to interfere with the transmission of election advertising, such as a campaign sign. It is also an offence to damage property under Section 430 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

It’s also an offence to damage property under the Criminal Code of Canada, meaning anyone who tampers with an election sign can be charged with mischief.

Signs may be placed on private or public property and must not be disturbed unless their placement poses a demonstrable safety risk.

If anyone has any information regarding the damage or removal of election signs, they are encouraged to contact the Nelson RCMP at 250-352-2156 or the Commissioner of Canada Elections.
