Police watchdog investigating Nelson RCMP’S handling of fatal crash

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has launched an investigation into Nelson RCMP’s handling of a collision that claimed the life of a 25-year-old man west of Nelson on January 18.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.

According to the IIO report, the investigation surrounds the death of a 25-year-old man who lost his life in a single vehicle collision west of Nelson on Highway 3A/6 after his vehicle went off the side of an embankment.

The report says the family of the deceased reported that police were notified of the collision shortly after it occurred when he failed to arrive at his destination on time.

The man was found deceased the next morning.

The IIO states it was notified of the incident on April 14 when the man’s family raised concerns about police actions regarding the search and discovery of the deceased.

As a result, the IIO has begun an investigation.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information about the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
