SHSS to open Monday

Stanley Humphries Secondary School in Castlegar will re-open Monday after the fire in a boys bathroom on Wednesday. The clean-up has been completed. RCMP continue to investigate the blaze they deem suspicious.

The Kootenay Columbia School District released the following update Sunday:

The clean-up due to the fire in one of the main floor bathrooms at Stanley Humphries Secondary School has been completed.  We appreciate everyone’s patience as we dealt with the fire and smoke damage.  I am pleased to announce that Stanley Humphries Secondary School will reopen to students and staff on Monday, February 16th.  The school will remained locked and secured Sunday night and no staff or students are to enter the building tonight.

Our custodial and operations crews worked with 2 local restoration companies to complete the clean-up.   We also worked with a crew from the Okanagan to help clean the air ducts in all affected areas.  We have turned on the heating and ventilation system to help warm the building and circulate the air.  The area has been cleaned thoroughly from top to bottom.  We had air quality testing performed today and all samples came back in the good range.

The boy’s bathroom on the main floor, where the fire occurred, will remain closed.  We have opened another bathroom in the cafeteria area to provide alternate access.

Monday February 16th was scheduled to be a late start, ‘collaboration Monday’ schedule but it will now be a regular scheduled day.  Students will be allowed into the building starting at 8:15am on Monday morning.

I want to thank everyone who was involved in the clean-up.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Welcome back SHSS students and staff!

Sincerely,

Greg Luterbach

Superintendent of Schools
