The BC Wildlife Federation wants a review into how the government allowed Kokanee numbers to collapse so quickly on Kootenay Lake.
The successful fertilization program saw their numbers surge so that then triggered an increase in their natural predators like Gerrard Rainbow trout who’ve now eaten nearly all of them. As a result the trout have no food and they are now dwindling.
Retired fisheries biologist Harvey Andrusak says the ministry could have averted the crisis.
He’s frustrated by the lack of government action because the fishery collapse will hurt the economy for the next ten years.
A public meeting on the issue has been called for the Balfour Hall next Monday.
The ministry was not immediately available for comment.
