Nelson Police staffing issues beginning to resolve

Nelson Police staffing levels have improved significantly over the last two months.

The department announced in April that it was facing unforeseen staffing shortages and would be relying on the RCMP to help fill gaps when needed.

This has meant that RCMP officers from neighbouring detachments, including Castlegar, have had the opportunity to work overtime in Nelson to cover NPD shifts during short staffing periods.

There have also been days when the force was sufficiently staffed and did not require additional coverage.

But now, things are looking up, according to NPD Inspector Jason Jewkes.

The department hired a new sergeant on June 2, with another joining the force on July 1. Additionally, one member has returned to work, and another is set to graduate from the Justice Institute of BC at the beginning of July.

“Our staffing levels are improving significantly. These additions have greatly strengthened our team.”

While NPD’s request for RCMP assistance is still ongoing, Jewkes says shift coverage has only been needed during low-staffing periods, adding that the department continues to reevaluate on a daily basis.
